Gerald, you're right, of course, as usual. But I think someone should point out that the condenser (capacitor) acts on the low (battery) voltage, and is not directly involved with the coil secondary (high) voltage at all. With the points closed, the current through the coil primary is sufficient to cause the contact points to arc when they open, unless the condenser is there to absorb some of the interrupted current. Without the condenser, the points would burn under arcing and become useless in short order. This is the real purpose of having the condenser there.
