we have cut probably thousands of little locust trees and you have to get them cut at or below ground level or they can puncture a tire, no matter what shape it is, or how much weight is on it. We have fixed many many flats because of this, and even ruined a few tires because the people who owned the pasture before me cut them off about 2-3 inches above ground level. If the tree speer hits at just the right angle, it will go through. I would recommend cutting them by hand, and then picking them up and burning them. Where a thorn falls, a new tree will start, bseides the fact that the thorns take forever to degrade. BTW the locust stems will also grow back if not treated with tordon or someother brush killer.
