I just mowed my field with a Farmall A and a 4 foot brush hog. I used second gear most of the time, saw third on the flat parts once in a while. Couldn't use third on the hilly parts because I was too scared to go that fast, not because it couldn't do it. The grass was only about 6-10 inches, and I chopped it down to 4, but it was wet. I have a 20 HP wheelhorse garden tractor with 4 foot deck that would have died in the wet stuff. The field is 4 acres, and it took less than 2 hours with the Farmall. The Wheelhorse takes about 8 hours (sore butt!). I agree with HR, there is something messed up. When I got mine, it had sat for a long time, and the inside of the gas tank was rusty (still is in fact). It would just simply stop once in a while, and would have to sit a while before it would start again. It turned out that the screen in the fuel sediment bowl was missing, and the little inlet filter in the carb was clogging up. I put a new screen in, and also put an in-line filter in the fuel line. The first time I used it after that, the sediment bowl was 1/2 full of rust after an hour of use! The quantities of rust are diminishing with use, and the tractor no longer stops.
