If the radio has an external AM antenna connector, you can try hooking it up to a piece of wire. It's not that critical how long it is. String the wire across your rafters or some other high spot.

If there's no external AM antenna connector, you can try opening up the radio and locating the AM antenna. It will probably be a brown rod about three-eighths of an inch long, wrapped in fine wire. Take a piece of wire and tape it alongside the antenna (lengthwise with the antenna and crosswise with the antenna windings). You can hook this wire to anything you think might help reception: A wire, piece of steel, whatever. You can also try making a couple of wraps around the antenna with your external antenna wire, but this will affect the tuning and you may start to pick up shortwave stations and other odd stuff.

Your best bet is to either get a high quality AM radio, or spring for XM or Sirius satellite radio.
