The 8 in the model number indicates its the model that came out in 1948. It was only made until 1952. The last year of production had a side distributor, the previous production had a front distributor, like the 9N (came out in 1939), the 2N (war time version came out in 1942), and the prewar flat head Ford V-8.

Its an 8N by that casting number. Other checks are that it has 4 speeds forward in the transmission, and when a front wheel hits a clod or curb the ball worm steering doesn't break your arm. The 9N and 2N had three speeds in the transmission and used bevel gears in the steering box so clods and curbs could break the driver's arm. Also the steering shafts out each side of the bevel gear box are in line where in the 8N they are separated vertically. I'm thinking that the steering arms are part of the shaft in the bevel steering box and separate for the 8N.

So depending on the distributor its either 1948 to 1951 or 1952. Now if you do find the serial number you can get some closer.
