Going to echo a lot of what was said earlier. Take the cover plate off of the pump and inspect the impellors for wear. Look for chipped teeth at the sides of each end. A bad pump will be chewed up on sides of both teeth. Most often you can order new impeller gears for a lot less than a new pump. Next check the pump body and cover plate for grooves cut by metal caught in the pump. A lot of times you can have the cover plate underside machined smooth and save the pump housing. Finally check the pressure bypass valve if the pump has one. Is a spring loaded piston of some type. Sometimes a chunk of gasket gets caught between the piston and the body, or it just gets plain sludged up with varnished. On my Case 148 CID they wanted $640.00 for a new pump; I had it completely rebuilt with two new gears and a new drive shaft for $275.00. This included machining the cover plate and building a new gear drive shaft, cutting the groove for the woodruf key, and drilling both the shaft and gear for the roll pin. Regards Jeff King
