You are testing my memory, but I believe the initial "8" means it is the bigger engine utility tractor. Now it gets more fuzzy. In the intermediate position a "4" was for the 4 speed and "6" was for the 5 speed, and "8" was the 10 speed jerk-a-matic. Now the plot thickens, when I began this, I thought the 1 was for live PTO. Now I am not so sure. We had an 861, 961 and 640. The 961 was diesel, row crop, 5 spd, with live PTO. The 861 was utility, large engine gas, 5 spd, with live PTO. The 640 was 4 spd small gas engine, utility with non-live PTO. We had a 960 for a short time when the 961 was being worked on and I believe it was a a big engine gas row crop with non-live PTO. However after saying all of this, I believe the "5" with a following 1 must be for 4 spd live PTO model or alternatively a 5 spd non-live PTO. When all is done I guess I am not that much help. Probably has power steering I don't believe you can tell from the model number. If it doesn't have live PTO, I would pass. I much preferred the 5 sp over the 4 spd and would avoid the selecto-spd, unless you just want to have something different rather than useful. Engine rebuild parts are readily available, many suppliers.
