From a Case history book comes the following information. The first S built was 4500001 on November 4, 1940. Early models had the smooth block (no ribs), fenders were deep dish style like early DC models, and the exhaust exited through the hood centerline as did the air cleaner stack. Hood sides were quite deep and lights were mounted on the fenders, one front facing and the other facing back. At # 4501149, the fuel tank bracket and battery cover were changed, the light bar was added under the hood with the lights moved there. A true tail light was added. The hood became a shallower sided model. Many light designs were used, the latest using a sealed beam. The last '40 was 4500789 on December 31/40. Changes in 1941 included the exhaust air stack to the outside at 4503029. Chrome strips on the tinwork were removed at 4600001 in 1942.Hope this helps.
