1953ish ford 8n

I just purchased this tractor and it has a reduction gear with the shifter on the right side of the transmission, in low range the tractor will not move it just grinds and bangs, in high range it will go but about every ten seconds it sounds like it is skipping a tooth or something. Can anyone give me an idea of what might be wrong and what it takes to work on those reduction type transmissions. Thanks bdc
