Alternator wiring for 12V conversion?

I recently bought a 9N which was converted to 12Volts. Problem is, I don't think it was done right. There was only one wire connected to the "+" post of the alternator. With this configuration, there is no charging shown on the alternator. But there are two other terminals on the alternator, "R" and "F". When I jumper "+" to "F", I get 10 amps on the ammeter. I also then show a battery drain when the tractor is off (back through the alternator?). Should I just wire the ignition switched "+" back to the "F" terminal? With this, am I taking advantage of the alternator's voltage regulator? Does "R" mean regulated? Would welcome info, as service manual only covers 6V operation. Thx. Paul
