By automatic tranny I assume you mean a "Select-O-Speed". There have been lots of horror stories spread around about that transmission. Yet there are those who really like it. I've never owned one so I can't say for sure. From what I've read on the Ford board, it seems the key to a dependable SOS tranny is frequent adjustment and religious servicing. You might want to do some archive searching on the Ford board for more information. Up at the top of this page you'll see a dialog box with the words "Hop to" next to it. In the box it will say "Another forum". Click the drop down menu arrow and select "Ford" (not Ford 9N, 2N, 8N) and go ask questions about that tractor there. You'll get comments good and bad.
