Insure your equipment........

Dad was talking to the shop forman at our local Komatsu dealership the other day and he showed him a small excavator that had been burned to a crisp. Dad said it had gotten so hot it had literally melted the sheet metal as well as part of the counterweight casting. The owner of the machine was burning brush and using it to feed the pile when he parked it and went to lunch. Needless to say he parked it to close to the pile and when they got back the flames were roaring from the machine too. I figure what happened was he parked it with the right side toward the fire and the plastic "site glass" for the fuel tank melted. Then the tank drained and pooled under the machine before running over and bringing the fire back with it. I've heard of this happening several times before to other guys. The owner had just bought the machine and it had less than 200 hours on it when this happened. Bad thing was he didn't have a bit of insurance on it so now he's out ten's of thousands of dollars and has nothing to show for it but a pile of scrap.....BUT IT'S NOT HIS FAULT, IT'S THE DEALERSHIP'S.... The man has said that he's gonna sue the dealership because they didn't tell him to get insurance on his machine in case of an accident.... If this ever makes it to a court I'll be suprised, but this day and age you never know. I can just see it now, you have to get a tag for your tractor just like you do for your car and you have to have proof of insurance to get the tag...and on...and on...and on.... Just something to think about. Wayne
