Single most important thing is to have everything on the tractor as clean as can be. The least little smear of grease or oil will cause problems. Painting is often easier if you partially disassemble things -- and on a tractor "easier" is a real understatement (at least cars don't have so many nooks and crannies exposed to view). Any loose paint should be removed and the area sanded so that the transition from paint to bare metal is smooth and as gradual as possible. Then clean the area and prime it. After having taken care of any such problems, sand the entire tractor, wash the tractor and then clean it with a pre-paint cleaner. Then I like to prime the whole thing before applying the color (yes you can do with out this step and some do, I just prefer priming it first). Good luck and post us an picture when you're done
