Joe,On the filter assembly the center bolt holds the filter on. Both little bolts to the side of the filter top are bleed screws for the filter. (Inside closest to engine is inlet screw, One away from engine is outlet bleed screw) You can fill the filter bowl with clean fuel before putting it on but that will only reduce the amount of times you'll have to pump the priming lever on the fuel lift pump (directly underneath injection pump with little handle on it) After replacing filter snug the center bolt (not too tight or you'll mess up the rubber o-ring, and be
sure you replace that o-ring) Loosen both bleed screws on the filter assembly and pump the lift pump lever till bubble free fuel comes from filter inlet screw - then snug it. Pump again till bubble free fuel flows from outlet screw - then snug it. Now, you'll have to bleed the injection pump itself. The pump bleed screw is the larger machine screw near the upper left hand corner of the pump -just under No.1 injector fuel line. Open it slightly and pump the primer lever
till clear non-bubbly fuel comes out - then snug the bleed screw. (As long as you change fuel filter rather quickly and don't let the system sit open for a long period of time there will only be a small amount of air in the pump line itself) If the fuel lift pump seems not to take a full stroke... bump the starter and turn engine over just slightly and try it again (this turns the cam a little to change pumpstroke of the lever.) Just a note - do not wipe out the fuel filter bowl with a rag. Use only a brush or rinse it thoroughly with clean fuel after cleaning it to prevent ANY rag fibers from remaining in the bowl.
