New vs. Old

Was out mowing the lawn yesterday on my 2 year old, $2300.00 Craftsman "garden tractor". Yeah, I know. Spare me the Sears junk comments. Anyhow, I hits a rock and finds that I've busted the center spindle out of the mower deck. Still got lawn to finish so I try the weedwacker. Not quite the finish I was looking for. So in desperation I go out beside the machine shed and drag my 1964 Wheel Horse "Lawn Ranger", ( I am NOT kidding!, that's the model name!), outta the weeds. I tow it up the the garage and put some gas system cleaner in the tank and fill it up with fresh gas. The electric start doesn't even go thunk, so I get a rope and wind it on. Mind you, this thing has 2 flat tires and hasn't been run in 3 years at least. My son used to follow me around with it. God as my witness it started on the 2nd pull! I had to oil the crap outta the mower gears and turn them by hand a few times but even that worked! Half a can of fix-a-flat in the tires and away I went. The old Briggs 3 or 5 HP motor never even smoked. True enough the gear drive mower deck is noisy and there's no hydostatic tranny or a cup holder even, but it worked fine. I think I should have saved my $2300.00.
