This is a update to my last post about a Onan P220V that has no spark while cranking buts fires when key is released. Following advice from replies to my question I took the ignition key switch apart noting the terminals for off, on, and start and made my own wiring diagrams. ( have none for this Mtd mower or the Onan engine )Checked operation of switch with ohm meter and it worked and also bypassed the switch by jumping the connector itself to see if it would make a difference. No change. Removed the safety switches all except the park switch so the mower couldn't be started in gear. Checked voltage at coil with key both in run and start position and had 12 volts. Removed flywheel and had so much dust that the stator was hard to see. Cleaned it and reinstalled everthing and the engine fired up. I let it warm up then shut it off to install the deck which took about 20 minutes then went to mow the grass only to find out it wouldn't start again. Flood the engine to get it to start on momentum, once started it runs smooth, mow grass for about two hours and the engine won't idle, keeps surging if the blades aren't engaged or the engine isn't under a load like pulling a hill, even parked with throttle wide open it surges up to the governer. Taking a guess it surges to 3600 rpm , drops to 3000 rpm , back up and so on. Can smell that it is burning rich but there is no adjustments because the jets are fixed. Something in the iginition circuit is going out and with what Onan parts cost who can afford to guess. Any ideals to track this down. This engine is 9 years old and has never acted up before.

Today's Featured Article - The Nuts and Bolts of Fasteners - Part 2 - by Curtis Von Fange. In our previous article we discussed capscrews, bolts, and nuts along with their relative hardness and thread sizes. In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and ... [Read Article]
