1981 VW diesel Rabbit- 2000 miles checking mileage, full tank at same station once a week record gallons/mileage =48 to the gallon. $100.00 purchase + 2 tires and patch exhaust. Younger brother got a 80's diesel Escort last year- $350.00 + heater core and broken back window. Gets 40+ mpg. 81 Dodge pickup, slant six/4speed miser and 84 Dodge slant 6/4speed camper special=15 to 18 mpg country roads/some in town. not the fastest but cruise 55/60. Some economy specials out there. RN.
