ford 3000 hyraulic pump problem?

i have a 1968 ford 3000, 3 cyl diesel. i put a 3000psi guage on the pump - 500+ psi will raise the 6' box blade - once up, it stays up. i noticed that if i shut the tractor down for a little while that i would get pressure for a short time. Sometimes i had enough to raise the blade, other times the pressure would fall off and go to zero and pretty much stay there. I figured the pick up screen might be clogged and had to slowly refill the pick up tube. i pulled the lift cover and the screen was packed with debris. i replaced the piston seal and packing, all o-rings, return filter and fresh fluid. right after the repair the box lifted again around 500+ psi , but let it down and it would come up only sometimes. i engaged the remote and got 1500 psi one time and the pump chattered fairly loudly. lift was intermittant for the next 10 mins of operation as before. let the tractor and myself rest a day. now i have no lift. 0-100 psi usually more psi with less rpm, no noise. the "spin over, throttle stop pulled, guage removed" method has always revealed steady heaves of fluid from test port indicating pump prime.
flow control valve adjustment seemed to help after work done when had some pressure. i did have a chattering lift when more pressure was allowed by screwing in flow valve - backing off reduced chatter and box still lifted, but only with pressure registering at guage, of course.
before screen clean and other repairs were attempted, i did fabricate a gasket and turned the remote cover around and checked psi - no change. manual says to shim back pressure valve. i did not do this, but figured a totally stuck open back pressure valve would still allow some kind of pressure reading.
how does the pump go from adequate pressure to no pressure or very little without making noise except the one time at 1500 psi? broken drive gears or shafts don't do that, right? broken springs and no noise? is control (lift) lever linkage adjustment under lift cover that sensitive and could it be related? if any valve were stuck open wouldn't the pump still be able to register something?
i did not pay a fortune for this tractor, but have not decided whether to keep it after blading the small piece of land i own. i will replace it with a large lawn tractor, if i do sell, for grass maintenance as such a large tractor with so many trees in the yard may not be practical. i do have budget for a reman pump, probably have the skills/tools to rebuild myself or the $ to take to the ford dealer, but am looking for advice before i take that monstrously heavy lift cover off again or spend money unwisely and erode any margin on the resale i might have.
