Mowing a 1/2 acre is that a plain field or trees etc. If you have to go around a lot of objects then get the hydrostatic model - they allow you to slow up and speed down easily - if not then get the geared ones - they are cheaper. Min HP depends on how fast you want to do things -you can get a 9-10 hp but it will take longer to cut as they will have a smaller deck - a bagger you can add with an extra blower to blow into the bag. The bigger engines can support large like 60 inch decks so they cut larger areas faster. Brands - I like the older models - JD's Wheelhorse, the older Gravelys's, etc. they have stronger built frames and are made of steel and are welded frames... Used models - depends what they were doing - cutting a lawn is not much of a deal - ask basic questions - like oil changes etc, garage kept is better, and if it looks good is should be ok..ask the local dealer about the particular model if they now of any defects in it. Unless they have an hour meter you would just be going on the owners word about usage. For a blade the wheelhorses are better than the jd's because the blade attached to the back wheels allowing the whole frame and weight of the tractor to push where the jd's attach to the front good luck
