Up thru 1940 they only came with a four speed and that was a 2 speed with high and low range, after market companies made a road gearadd on transmission that mounted on the left side of the transmission case, plainly visable, this would also be avaible for the 41-46 tractors that orignaly came out on steel and with the 4 speed transmission, the four speed did not have the cast shifter quadrent on, only the 6 speed and that continued on after the change from the angle iron frame to the pressed steel frame that came out as a 47 model, 47 and up only came with a starter, 41-46 most likely came with a starter if a 6 speed transmission, if 4 speed then most likely no starter, 39-40 could be gotten from factory with starter on 4 speed but verry rare, open radiator 34-38 you could get an add on starter, does it have an electrical system on it and if it does where is the battery, in hood or under seat? If you go to John Deere and get a parts manual for a styled A that will give you the information to date by looking for any changes made over the years. I have done that for one that I had and it was a late 51 or early 52 acording to the parts book, I just dated a B last spring for a friend the same way, any more questions email me.
