Does it work in 2nd gear or is the transmission locked up? If the first, I don't know what's wrong. If the second, it's actually engaging two gears at once. If this happened while moving, the odds are REAL good that you'll find broken teeth on a few gears. This is generally caused by a broken detent spring or worn detent pin. Neither part costs much, but they sure do damage when they go. In any case, the transaxle isn't hard to work on. You can find out more over on the lawn and garden tractor forum.
