As it was a felt seal originally and is a grease seal on a slow moving shaft you may well get away with it. The seal was, afterall, as much to keep dirt out as grease in. The instructions in those days may well have said to grease regularly and until grease pushed out a little of the old grease (along with any dirt). As its grease, it won't get lubed by splash and will soon wear if it gets dry. Regards, RAB
