Sounds like you've already ID'd the M as a SMTA...if you've got the S/N correct, that should be an MTA. Easy enough to tell from looking at it though: Live PTO lever coming from the PTO shaff area on the back right side of seat? TA lever on the clutch pedal side with linkage running up to the clutch's linkage area? If so, no S/N is needed, that's a MTA. You'll have to forgive me though, I don't know of any bad points on the MTA other than they are getting expensive. To test the TA best, you need to have the tractor under a load. Sometimes, you can't do this while buying...no plows around, usually. But, if you can find a good grade on the road, in the drive or a hay field, put the M in 5th gear with the TA engaged. Don't give it much gas as you are going up the grade. Did it slip 'out of gear'? The TA is about to go. Did it hold under load? TA 'should' be good. Any other ways out there?
