I don't follow the logic of planting E-W to take full advantage of the sun. Seems like the advantage would be with rows running N-S, so both sides of the plants get sun, and the sun is more likely to hit the row middles and lower leaves (especially corn). SF Magazine had an article many years ago about that. I normally plant the fields in the long direction, but it's flat enough here to not be concerned about erosion.
