My uncle was a Jeep/Mercury/general mechanic.Told me yrs ago that the super detergents would scour crud loose in an engine better than anthing else,As to temp breakdown,working tranny runs hotter than thermostat controlled engine does.Unc useta put in 1 qt ATF instead of 1 qt oil every 3rd oil change on his own and approving customers vehicles.Never heard of ANY problems resulting from this practice.He also claimed ATF had better cling,preventing dry starts where most engine wear occurs,and not to believe in any"cure in a can" products with a couple exceptions in special circumstances.He treated his small engines the same,couple oz of ATF every 3rd chg or so.Had opportunity a couple yrs ago to help with a rebuild of his 196? Jeep CJ Plowing jeep with 192K on its V6(Buick) and the cliche"you coulda ate offa that" came to mind.Virtually NO debris in engine,just light oil film.Now HIS was an era before all the special gagetry and widgets modern cars have which may require something different.His widows 86 Caravan had 240K on it at tradeoff in 1999,so I tend to believe him.
