I have two older tractors both converted to 12v.
the first I converted was a Farmall 200. I needed new lights, and couldn't find much in 6v - especially those special Farmall sealed beams. By going to 12v, I was able to get sealed beam work lights cheap! Also wanted to put flashing lights, and even a rotating beacon on for safety on the road. Having 12v made these things easy. Alternator was purchased from a backyard rebuilder, cheap! Replaced the coil, old one was questionable anyway. Needed a new battery, so that was a draw. All in all, I've probably got less than $100 in the whole change. Tractor starts very well, can be used to boost anything else on the farm, and I'm happy with the results.

Second tractor to get the conversion was a John Deere B. Started very slugishly on 6v, on 12v it's turning over and starting right now! conversion was simple - since generator needed repair anyway, and a new regulator, we just put on a 12v regulator.(And reversed polarity) New battery needed anyway, ignition system is magneto, so nothing needed there, Just a new 12 volt bulbs! Works great. Would never know it is 12v unless looking under the seat. Son refurbished this one for his senior project in high school, and was posted here a while back. Also was pictured in a recent issue of "TWO CYLINDER" magazine. Son was out pulling a field cultivator and grain drill with it last week.

To those of you who are purists, and need to keep their 6v systems, I understand. Mine are not show tractors, - they're workers, and I need them to work. I don't scoff at your insistance on 6v systems, please don't look down your nose at me for making practical modifications in my worker tractors.

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
