How about another way of thinking about this? Say you're working a 40 acre field, which can be thought of as a square that's 1320 x 1320 feet. For the sake of argument, say you're using a 20-foot wide implement. To cover the entire field, that would mean you'd need to make about 66 trips across the field (1320 / 20). 66 x 1320 = 87,000 feet. (number of passes x length of field) divided by 5280 (number of feet in a mile) = 16.5 miles. Just to make one pass over the field. The "mileage" would add up quickly.
