Hayman, I agree with you. If it's strictly gravel (no dust) it will be difficult to compact even then. I like "crusher run", a combination of stone dust and various size crushed stone: it will compact and "set up" almost like concrete. Absent a plate tamper or vibra-roller, I would use a back blade on my tractor. The tires will exert more lbs. per sq. in. than the roller and if you make enuf passes to cover the whole driveway using the blade to knock off the high spots, you should be able to do a fairly nice job.IMHO
