no ruse, i assure you! it could indeed be none too old (this excavation is for the Connecticut Historical Society, and doesn't deal with any time periods too far back). it sounds like it probably is a brace, though, and I am guessing it would serve a more or less similar function as a brace whether it was 100 years old or 60. Thank you again for your help, I appreciate it greatly.
