oil/fuel mixture/control

I have a 1952 JD60. When I put a load on it I begin to see smoke from the breather tube. When I changed the oil a week ago I noticed a scent of gas from it. I had some work done on it when I first got it (a check-up) and the mechanic (not overly skilled with JD specifically)said it seemed to mix a bit rich. Would that explain the gas smell and smoke? Should I attempt to adjust the carb (how)? I need to be able to plow this week unless I am nearing the death of this engin. Any advise would be appreciated. Eric
