The 3000 is a bit larger than the "N" series. I have an 801 Series Powermaster which is I think an 861. It has about 47 hp and the 3000 is about 38 I think. My 801 has been great. It has been in my family since new, 1958. My dad farmed over 60 acres with it. I had used it in the past years to mow /bush hog about 40 acres. It has now been retired to lighter work, but still the most used tractor I have.
As far the "live pto", I think there are three different types of pto's. One is always on when the tractor is running, which I think the 8N's had but I may be wrong. Then there is the PTO that is turned on and off with a lever but is on when the lever is on. The third is a 2 stage pto. A lever is used to engage and disengage the pto, but then if the clutch is depressed completely the pto will stop. I have this on my 801 and love it. It works especially well when mowing. If you hit something you didn't want to, like a tree stump or metal or something, you are floundering around to find the pto lever if you don't have a 2 stage pto. Whereas your natural instict is to push in the clutch, which stops the PTO. Also works ideally when bailing hay, but it doesn't sound like you would be doing that.
Do a quick search in the ford forum on 3000, looks like most of those guys over there are happy with theirs.
