We found a handful of shavings around the engine oil filter on the two cylinder 80 JD on it's 1st oil change after a rebuild. Didn't seem to bother it over the past eight years and a couple of hundred hours doing field work and parades. Big chunks don't really matter as long as they don't block an oil intake screen. Small dirt particles below 10 microns if memory serves, don't bother much either. It's the dirt 10 to 5000 microns or so that causes grief.
