In case you didn't dig too deep into the archives for information, I'll tell you what I've HEARD about the whole incident. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm not afraid to admit when I am!)

Word has it that the engine was a newly restored Case 110, one of the biggest engines still in existance. The operator was driving it into the fairgrounds at Medina County, Ohio, and was reportedly running out of water. His pop off valve was screaming at the top of its lungs, and he was trying to hustle to get it to its destination and shut it down. (Mistake #1-- He should have shut it down there and then!) Enroute to getting it onto the grounds, he was stopped by a representative of Ohio's finest Law enforcement, and delayed the operator further by questioning him about the damage to the blacktop on the road. Once he had finished with the deputy, and got the engine onto the grounds, it was too late. So, as one person put it, YES, IT WAS OPERATOR ERROR. Had he just dropped his fire, released his pressure, and let things cool down, we would not be having this discussion right now.

And the ripples are still moving across the pond. I was watching, of all things Discovery Channel's show MONSTER GAREAGE the other day, and the project they were working on involved building a pipe organ. THe star of the show was considering using steam for the organ, but the other people on the project said "No, did you hear about what happend to the old tractor in Ohio?" And that was almost two years ago...

The club that I belong to has lost our insurance coverage to have live steam engines operate during our show, and it has definately put a big dent in our attendance and membership. Until someone with a true voice in the insurance business can realize that everyone involved in this hobby has been hurt by this one unfortunate incident, and that we need this coverage in order to survive, then we will all suffer.

If anyone has an idea as to a cure for this, my email awaits hearing from you...
