The mideast is not the major oil supplier to the US nowadays. Other nations that we import oil from would include Venazuala (which is having problems with their workers thus limiting their exportation and helping our fuel prices to go up), Russia, Mexico, and offshore sites. The corn based fuel idea was shot down by the californian cause they linked the exhaust of a corn fuel to smog. As far as the food connection to the corn fuel, we can use our tech capabilities and commit some areas to the bio-corn that everybody is too affraid to eat. Rapid growth DNA would be of no concern to an engine. Now we can find alternatives to replace an oil supplied electrical source much faster than a motor fuel. The problems that the current alternatives have when compaired to the gas/diesel is the cost of production (hydrogen), the amount of power produced (electric), and the lack of portability (pressurized gas). Most of the environuts are so focused on the MPG's or the zero emmitions they do not see the lack of practical use of the gasoline/diesel engine. If we are to replace the gas/diesel engine, we need a fuel source that will compete on the same capabilities that the gas/diesel fuel excels in. A small fuel efficient vehicle will limit 1)a family's transportation ability (city buses are 30 miles from me and 40 miles from work), 2)an elderly person to have the freedom to move about (crawling out of a little car is not good on these old joints), and 3)a business or utility to provide their goods and services at a reliable time (it takes a big truck to keep the Walmart full of goodies AND EMERGENCY SERVICES WOULD BE LIMITED BY THE ALTERNATIVES THAT ARE AVAILABLE). An electric fire truck or ambulance would hamper the abilities of those who operate them and be deadly to those who need them (concidering the fact that some of those vehicles run 24+ hours between shutdowns)
