The smartest comment I have read on this topic is "It's not how much you can pull, it's how much you can stop!" Don't do this if you don't have trailer brakes. Your GVWR rating might be because of the hitch - not the axles. I have a tandem axle trailer with two 3500# axles, but my hitch is rated 7500#. I think a 1 7/8" ball maxes at 5000#, a 2" ball goes up to 7500 or 8000#.
