I operate without lights if at all possible. Pretty much, if I can see what I am doing I don't turn them on. If your eyes aren't adjusted to head lights and it is say a moonlit night it is pretty neat how much a guy can see and do after the sun goes down. It is being out on roadways without lights that becomes a danger because other motorists can't see you. You don't have that danger in the field when you are working alone. Then it is just a matter of those pitch dark nights that you can't see nothing such as when the moon is not out, or cloud cover blocking it. It's then manditory to have lights on. About the only thing you can do then is fight the bugs. I have worked after dark many of times without lights. Especially on jobs that doesn't require alot of visual observance. I guess bottom line is, some people reach for that light switch nob as soon as the sun has set. I for one don't turn em on untill I absolutely need them.
