Just give the H a good tune up, and, if it needs it an overhaul, don't waste your time and the tractor trying to "soup it up", it won't take much power increase and you'll have trouble with driveline parts. Any bigger John Deere two cylinder model is better for pulling. If you're gonna use the H for which it was intended, just get it in good shape. True they're geared through the camshaft because they're a pretty high revving tractor and if they had made the pulley on the crankshaft and small enough to have the fpm belt speed in proper range, the pulley would have to have been real small, limiting the clutch size. The cam/primary gearing is adequate for the engine in stock form, but won't take much power increase and neither will the gearing in the transmission. The H was designed to be very economical, to buy. to operate and to maintain, it was a true "horse replacer".
