If it is equiped with a magnito, the magnito makes its own spark and doesn't require any juice from battery unless it has been modified to a battery powered coil. A tractor equiped with a magnito therefore can run even with a dead battery. Just can't be started with the battery/starter. Let me ask you this. Was the tractor starting and running O.K. before the really cold below zero weather? If so, the problem is likely caused by the cold weather. The colder it gets the harder it is for the battery/starter to crank the engine. If to cold and the starter or battery is a little weak it likely won't even turn the engine over. Also the choke has to be just right on a really cold engine or the engine will run rough when you actually get it started. Might explain why it went putt putt putt and then died that time. New battery's sometimes aren't exactly fully charged when you get them. You might slap a battery charger on it and insure that it is fully charged. It is probably drained by now if you have been trying to start it. If you think it is cold weather related, you should be able to start it by pull starting it. Once it is started and run for a bit to warm up it should run alright. Really cold weather will really put everything to the test.
