I had two poor experiences with synethics. Mobile 1 in a new 1976 small Chevy Monza with a 305 V8. I installed the Mobile 1 at 2000 miles so break-in could occur first. At 5000 miles the car started burning oil. At 10,000 miles not only did the motor burn a quart of oil every 200 miles, the auto dealer wanted to warranty the engine with a complete rebuild. I never stated I used Mobile 1. I just traded the car off.
My 1996 Ford Probe engine ended up very tired at 120,000 miles with Mobile 1. About 90% was highway driving.
Our 1988 Plymouth Mini van with a 4 cylinder & Castrol GTX oil was sold to our friends in great running condition at 250,000 miles. The engine got better than 3000 miles a quart. After 300,000 miles we lost track of it.
The Mobile 1 has been recently reformulated. Now, instead of 2nd place competition to Amsoil synthetic during a loaded bearing ware test, it is now in 4th place. Second place is Havoline Formula 3, non-synthetic oil.
The best I will do with synthetics is use Amsoil in my air cooled engines with a 50/50 blended mix using the Havoline. The Amsoil does stick to a hot cylinder wall & does not carborize in very hot conditions. In gasoline tractors, I will only use Havoline non-synthetic oil or another quality manufacture of non-synthetic oil if Havoline is not available.
This is why I do not believe in pure synthetic oil and never consider Mobile 1. In fact, I used to install 50 mega-watt electrical power peakers using two 38,000 horsepower Pratt Whitney jet engines running off of natural gas. These turned a generator. Pratt Whitney would void warranty in a second using a non-jet engine rated synthetic oil. The automobile synthetics are not even close to jet engine oils. Mobile 1 and others used a completely different & inexpensive base to formulate their oils.
I'll go with water cooled engines using Havoline & oil/filter changes at 3000 miles or 50 running hours in a tractor using a gasoline engine.
