the starter dont know the difference, it will be fine. you generator is the main problem. you have to know if you have a alternator or generator and if it is 6 or 12 volts and where you are going next. a generator can not just swith the wires and make it charge the other way. the generator needs to be rewound, or replaced. possibly the voltage regulator also, if it is not a dual purpose. sometimes just polarizing it will make it o.k. like you say, swith wires on coil and if you change voltages you will need the other coil, or a dropping resistor might have been added going from 6 to 12 volts.
