Filters are cheap and pumps can be quite expensive. Change filters often or at least once a year under light duty. The sure way to tell and perhaps the best is to install a vaccum gauge right after the primary filter. As the filter gets dirty the vaccum will gradually get higher. Around 8 to 10" of vaccum change her out. To keep running it puts a severe strain on the injection pump. Kinda like trying to breath through one nostril while running. Air will not hurt a pump during filter change. Properly bleeding all the air out before start up will eliminate any problems. Invest in OEM quality filters as not all filters are as good. A lot of tractors only have one filter, seems they like to sell pumps too. Pump shops also like people who don't maintain their filters. Diesel Dan (the pump man)
