I am not a dairyman but a cow calf farmer and not quit that far North either but I know what I would do. I would have a heated shed big enough to house all the cows and feed them in there for when it turned extreme cold. I don't mean like all the way heated like 80 degrees either. I mean like heated to 15 or 20 degrees above zero. I would probably do this with huge wood stoves or something to make it cost efficient. And yes, I would take all the precautions as to not getting the whole place lit on fire. Such as having an all metal building and keeping livestock and feed completely away from wood stove areas. The milk barn would be close by if not part of the same building and cattle would only be confined to indoors when it was severly cold or during winter storm.
