some jd models have power brakes (brake pressure prvided by the main hydraulic pump),other models have 'master cylinder' brake system. in power brakes, diconnect brake line at tha rear and put in a container.start the engine and depress the relevant brake pedal, there should be a high speed flow out of the line as long as the pedal is depressed. if there is,plug the line with a proper plug (or a 3/8nf bolt with a small bearing ball).the pedal should be high and strong (with the engine running!). if so,you have leakage at the brake pistons area. if not, the problem is within the brake valve or high pressure hydraulics. in the master cylinder system, the reservuir is filled by the tractors low pressure system(rear pump).you have to make sure the cylinder is filled with oil. on older models there is a large plug on the brake cylinder housing. open it and see if it's full. if it is, disconnect one of the lines at the cylinder and plug the nipple. when you depress the relevant pedal it should have little movement and then stop. if the pedal goes all the way down there is a problem within the brake cylinder.if not there is a leakage in the brake piston area. all these checks should be carried out on both sides. by the way usually problems begin in one side. you should try to activte one side at a time. if the problem is only in one side, make these checks on the bad side david
