I retired 10 years ago after 22 years in the Army. It was an honor to serve. Looking back, I would not change a thing. I had both good and bad experiences (the bad were really bad). At 17, I think you should spend a little more time deciding what it is you want to do, especially now. If you do decide that you still want to enlist, think about what you want to do after your enlistment. The Army can offer some great training and experience while you are on active duty. Things to think about: PROS: The only thing keeping you from succeeding is your lack of motivation (and they can FIX the motivation part). You will get PROFESIONAL training and HANDS-ON experience in whatever profession you choose. You will learn how to work. You will become physically fit (if think you are already in physically fit, think again). You will have the opportunity to see the world. CONS: You will loose your freedom of speech rights. You can say "no," but you will pay dearly for it, financially with a lot of pain and suffering. The only thing worse than being dirty, cold, and hungry is being dirty, cold, hungry, tired, wet, and shot at.
