Ran a grease/service truck for a number of years for the heavy equipment in the mining industry, after many tests, trials and much propaganda from salesmen, and oil company repersentatives, we found that if we bought oil by the specs and not the color,or name on the can,(bought it in bulk any way) we filled the 200+ gallon tanks on the service trucks with the requested spec oil and then we took oil analysis samples on a regular basis, and as we changed it by the oil sample lab reccomendations, it made very little difference whose name was on the oil as long as it was in spec. The lesson I learned is this; (1) look at the viscosity number,(2) then look at the API index specification, (3) then look at the price, (4) then if you are still not satisfied look at the brand name. Don't think there are actually but just a refiners actually producing most all of the brands of oil, they get a spec sheet and bid on it to package it under a name, they will bottle it for you if you buy it in a big enough quanity. This was my experience in actual field work, mining with Cat,JohnDeere,IH,Komatsu,Dresser,Ford,Mack Gmc, Dodge,Detroit Diesels, Deutz, Bucyrus Erie, and even Lima Drag lines. The equipment wasn't choosy about what brand you fed it if it was good quality stuff. Gene

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
