This engine is out of a MH self-propelled cornpicker. The cam gear has a single dot on one tooth and dots on two consecutive teeth. On the crank gear, there is a number 1 with a circle around it. This symbol is a few teeth away from a single dot. When I took it apart, the single dot on the crank was between the two consecutive teeth on the cam. Seemed pretty logical to me, but the engine definitely cannot run that way. The exhaust valve opens two thirds of the way down the power stroke and closes early on the exhaust stroke. This would cut power and create pressure in the cylinder before the intake valve opens. I began retarding the timing one tooth at a time until the valves opened at the correct times.
