my dad told me that turning off a gas engine that was not back to the correct idle speed was hard on the engine. He said that as long as it continued to turn over it was sucking in gas, and with-out any spark to fire it, the fuel would wash oil off the cyl. walls causing dry rings on the next start up, and premature wear.
