Bill, try not to worry about it. I have worked on several weddings in various capacities, and I have seen how much things can cost. That number includes things like renting a church, string orchestra for the ceremony, catered sit-down dinner with china and fine silverware, band or disc jockey for the reception, dance hall for the reception, wedding gown that costs in the mid four-figures, chair and table rental for the reception, favors for everyone attending, engraved invitations, photos, the whole nine yards and then nine yards more. A lot of this stuff is fluff and isn't needed, or at least I think so.

One of my friends' daughters got married not quite two years ago. He and his wife coughed up nearly $2000 alone for photos - $2000!! Too much if you ask me. Get some people to bid against each other like you would do when you buy a car. Make 'em offer you a better deal. Music for the ceremony? CDs full of wedding music are available for $10-$15 ... a lot cheaper than paying for musicians. Know someone who has access to a building you could use for the reception? See if they'll let you use it for nothing or for a small fee, provided you clean up afterwards. Flowers? Could use silk instead of real. There are all kinds of ways to reduce cost. Oh, and one more thing ... the "perfect" wedding is a myth. I have yet to see a "perfect" wedding, and I think people worry too much about the details rather than focusing on the point of the wedding ceremony.

Tom has a great idea - determine how much you can afford and stick to it - if your daughter and her boyfriend want more than your budget allows, let them pay for it. They've got a year to save up for it, so why shouldn't they help out? It's their wedding, let 'em chip in on the cost.

The thing I don't understand is why people feel they have to put on a SHOW instead of a wedding. I know people who have actually taken out home equity loans to pay for their daughter's wedding. Everyone likes a nice wedding, but why do people have to show off???? I guess I just like things simple and straightforward.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
