Splitting 3414 - PTO shaft stuck

I'm Splitting my 3414 backhoe to repair the trans. Unfortunately it will come apart only about 3/4 of an inch. It appears that the pto shaft is frozen inside the pto drive gear. The IT manual talks about a snap ring or nut and washers on the end of the shaft, but I find nothing like that. The shaft appears to go through the gear, into a blind hole in the front of the case. Can anyone help me out? Thanks, Don H
