Well I'll throw my 2 cents in here...
You didn't say what else you would need your tractor for. You mention garden tractor size. A garden tractor will do a lot on one acre. Are you going to mow lawn with it? Plow snow? Plant a 1 acre garden? A lot of garden tractors will do all that. Are you looking for a "real" tractor? Do you want something newer? This is mostly a place for fixing and restoring older farm tractors. Is it to restore? Are you the kind of guy that wouldn't mind fiddling with an old machine? An old Cub Cadet? They're a big Lawn Tractor. But you can buy plows and discs and harrows and snow blades or blowers and of course mowers for them. Probably rototillers too but I'm not sure.
I have a 2N Ford. It's a predecessor to the Jubilees and other Ford tractors mentioned. It's smaller. Gas.
But I don't think I could find much use for it on less than a few acres. Unless maybe you have a lot of snow there, or Florida where you might till that 1 acre a couple of times a year.
Dunno. You mention gear drive and diesel.
Anything small, gear drive and diesel is going to be foreign made and new, or close to it, and therefore more money.
I just throw out the Cub Cadet as an example.
There were a lot of other oddballs and orphan small tractors made after WWII. If you looked around you might find something pretty cool like a Panzer or something. The boys on the garden tractor board below might give you a few hints too.
I'm not disputing any of the answers you see here Most of tractors I see described below are all real fine machines but way too big from the way I read your post.
Hope this helps
Jerry
